If you’re a wedding photographer who’s been curious about adding Super 8 wedding films to your offerings, you’re in the right place. This blog covers tips on how to shoot Super 8 films.
Super 8 is not digital video. It’s not a replacement for a full videography team. It’s nostalgic, imperfect, emotional, and deeply intentional. When done well, it feels like a memory you can step back into.
I started offering Super 8 wedding films in 2023 and it has completely transformed both my client experience and my revenue. Not only does it elevate my brand, it has added thousands of dollars in profit each season while still feeling aligned with my documentary, film-forward approach.
Why you should offer Super 8 Film vs. Traditional Digital Video?
Super 8 is not competing with videographers.
It’s a completely different experience.
Digital video is polished, crisp, and structured. Super 8 is organic, textured, and emotive. It feels like a vintage home movie — and that’s exactly why couples love it.
Here’s why photographers especially are positioned perfectly to offer it:
• It aligns beautifully with film photography • It requires a documentary eye, not a cinematic production crew • It adds high-margin profit without hiring a team • It attracts luxury and nostalgia-driven clients
Many of my couples don’t want a full videography team but still want movement and sound woven into their story. Super 8 bridges that gap.
My Journey integrating Super 8 Film into my Wedding Photography Business
When I first added Super 8, I was honestly nervous.
Film is an investment. You don’t get instant playback. You can’t “fix it in post.” But that’s also what makes it powerful.
Since 2023, offering Super 8 wedding films has brought in thousands in additional profit each season. More importantly, it has set my brand apart in a saturated market. My couples now associate my work not just with photography, but with timeless storytelling.
It also deepened my trust with clients. They see me as a creative director of their entire story — not just still images.
Quick Facts about Super 8 on Wedding Days
• Super 8 uses physical film stock (not memory cards) • Each roll typically runs about 2.5–3 minutes • Film must be professionally developed and scanned • You don’t see footage until it’s processed • It thrives in intentional, emotional moments
Super 8 is slower. And that’s part of its magic.
How to Shoot Super 8 films: The Workflow
The next section of this blog, I’m going to break down the three parts of Super 8: getting started, filming on the wedding day, and the post wedding day workflow.
1. Getting Started with Super 8
Before you ever step onto a wedding day with a Super 8 camera, you need to understand the film stocks and workflow.
Super 8 Film Types: 50D, 200T, & 500T
Each film stock behaves differently depending on light.
50D Best used in bright daylight. Low grain (50 ASA). This is my go-to for outdoor ceremonies and portrait time in full sun.
200T Best for cloudy days or indoor ceremonies. Tungsten balanced with medium grain (200 ASA). Extremely versatile.
500T Best for candlelit receptions, dim churches, or night portraits. Tungsten balanced with higher grain (500 ASA). This is what gives that moody, romantic reception look.
Choosing the correct stock is foundational to getting consistent results.
Developing & Scanning
After shooting, your film must be developed and scanned by a professional lab.
They handle: • Processing • High-resolution scanning • Digital file delivery
Understanding turnaround times and building that into your client workflow is essential.
2. Filming Super 8 on a Wedding Day
Super 8 works best when you approach it like a documentary photographer.
You are not directing cinematic sequences. You’re observing.
Tips for a Successful Wedding Film
• Prioritize movement (veil blowing, walking, hugs) • Keep shots steady and intentional • Film short, meaningful clips instead of long takes • Shoot transitional moments (guests arriving, details, environment) • Be aware of lighting constantly
You don’t need to film every second. You need to film what feels.
Second Photographers
If you’re shooting Super 8 and photography simultaneously, having a strong second photographer is crucial.
Super 8 requires focus. You cannot juggle it casually while shooting high-volume portrait sets. On wedding days where I know Super 8 is a priority, I adjust my workflow and delegate accordingly.
Backup Digital Video Footage
Some photographers choose to capture light digital backup clips for safety or audio layering. This is optional, but understanding how you want to approach editing ahead of time is key.
3. Delivering your Super 8 Wedding Films
The magic of Super 8 doesn’t end at shooting. Delivery matters just as much.
Editing the Super 8 Film
Once scanned, you’ll receive digital files that need to be:
• Color balanced • Trimmed and sequenced • Set to music • Exported properly
Editing Super 8 is not the same as editing digital video. It requires restraint. You don’t over-edit it. You let it breathe.
Delivery to the Client
I deliver Super 8 films alongside my wedding galleries in an online gallery platform. The key is positioning it as an heirloom piece, not a casual add-on.
Couples don’t just want footage. They want something that feels cinematic, nostalgic, and intentional.
Introducing: The Super 8 Masterclass
Over the past two years, I’ve had countless photographers ask how I added Super 8 to my wedding business.

This is not just about how to shoot film.
It’s about how to confidently integrate Super 8 into your brand and make it profitable.
